Coco, think of John Mulaney!
Can we please go back to two days.
In case you missed it last night, No.3 seed and reigning Roland Garros champion Coco Gauff went down to the wire with one-time Serena-slayer-but-for-real-very-incredibly-nice-lady Ajla Tomljanovic.
Coco served for a straight set win, proceeded to get the yips and it was a truly wild ride for the remainder of the 2-hour and 57-minute first-round duel, which ended with a 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-5 win for the American.
In case you want to see what it felt like, here is John Mulaney being ALL OF US:

Here's an article from The Athletic on the rise of the American women, who are trying to keep their streak of Grand Slam finals going:
Starting with Jess last year in New York, the baton has been passed to Madison in Melbourne, Coco in Paris and Amanda at Wimbledon. Pretty good!

Round 1 is finnnnnnally in the books β and here are some quick takeaways:
- The men's draw is pretty much intact. Nothing massively surprising unless you're me, a moron, who picked Medvedev to beat Bonzi despite their H2H and also fully expected Stefanos Tsitisipas to barely win points. Wrong on both counts!
- As for the women, Aryna, Iga, Elena, Jasmine, and Mirra all looked sharp. Coco and Jess fought through it. Watch out for Krej.
- WTA Bracket busters: WHERE DO I EVEN BEGIN?
- Madison Keys being undone by her own nerves, striking 89 unforced errors and losing in three sets to Renata Zarazua?

- Alex Eala coming from 5-1 down in the third to beat 14th seed Tauson? I mean, sure, feasible, but....

- I had Vicky Mboko going through to the quarterfinals, but that's my bad because I was unaware that the kid wasn't fully healed from her wrist injury. Chapeau, Babs.

- But truly, the shock of the first round for me was Anna Bondar dropping six games to 12th seed Elina Svitolina. That's....just not a result you AT ALL expect from the veteran. And I had her through to the quarterfinals. So...

- Best Quote of Round 1: Everyone should watch the entirety of Madison Keys' post-loss press conference.
"I've had a lot of success, I've probably won the most matches I've ever won in a year. But then losing today β it's moreso the way I played today β it kind of sucks. But big picture, if you told me at the beginning of the year what I was signing up for, I'd obviously say yes.
"So...that's β allegedly β the beauty of the sport."

- Here are the second round matches I'm keen on:
- Wednesday: Raducanu-Tjen, Kessler-Vondrousova, Jovic-Paolini, Azarenka-Pavluchenkova, Li-Bencic, Navarro-McNally, Ostapenko-Townsend; Fonseca-Machac, Bonzi-Giron
- Thursday: Osaka-Baptiste, Vekic-Gauff, Anisimova-Maya Joint the GOAT, Kalinskaya-Putintseva; Sinner-Popyrin, Musetti-Goffin, Walton-Wong, De Minaur-Mochizuki

- Thanks to everyone who has been joining me on Twitch this week! It's been really fun. I'll do my last stream of the week on Wednesday before I spend a few days hitting up my own personal version of Glastonbury.
What were your takeaways from the first three days? Holla in the comments.
